Ever in search of food inspiration, yesterday took me on a visit to a part of town I hadn’t probably visited for over 20 years – Camden Town in Central London. Expecting that the pace of change to have completely ripped the area apart, filling it with apartments, soulless offices and trendy shops I was enthused to see Camden Town remained as grungy as ever, with only a slight nod to canal side apartments and office developments … for the time being anyway.
A lovely ice cold beer (or two) overlooking the canal at Camden Lock, followed by the best Spanish Paella I’ve tasted outside of Spain, fluffy saffron infused rice with delicate seafood, served from one of the many food stalls around the Lock. The search was then on for a suitable desert! According to my friend there was only one option when in this part of London and that was Chin Chin Labs for their amazing range of Nitro frozen ice creams. To get the smallest ice crystals, in order to make the smoothest ice cream apparently only Liquid Nitrogen will do! OK so it was £4.50 per scoop, but my goodness was it delicious and the smoothest ice-cream ever!
From the sublime to the ridiculous with a visit to Gilgamesh for a couple of cocktails before heading back on the train. These sorts of places really do send a shiver down my spine these days, being more like a themed Las Vegas hotel than an environment which would allow great food to sing loudly…however the cocktails we tried we’re not too shabby.
Walking back to the station and saw this amazing display above a shopfront and thought what an amazing and unique part of London this is…. who wants another Starbucks to look at! Keep doing what you’re doing Camden for as long as possible, as we love you for it. x
